She received a master’s degree in psychology in 1991 from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Julie worked as a music therapist at the Psychiatric Institute of Fort Worth and a music therapist and mental health counselor at a community mental health center in Weatherford, OK. She also became a certified Kindermusik teacher and a Licensed Professional Counselor. After her children enrolled in preschool, Julie opened a private counseling practice.

Her family moved to Springfield, MO in 2001. In 2002, she opened a private practice in music therapy, which is currently located on the campus of Drury University. It has grown into a large practice with services provided by several music therapists.

In 2014, Julie started the non-profit Music Therapy of the Ozarks, with the vision of raising money to provide funding for services for those individuals and agencies that are not able to afford music therapy, while promoting music therapy in the community.
